Madagascar Mushroom Garland: Woodland Whimsy, Island Roots
From Palm Frond to Fairy Forest
Along Madagascar’s east coast, artisans harvest raffia palm, sun-dry the fibers, and twist them into twine. They then knot and shape each strand into tiny mushroom caps and stems—some left straw-beige, others tinted with plant-based reds and creams. Caps are strung on a 6-foot raffia cord, ready to drape over mantels, shelves, or children’s rooms. Prosperity Wages funded through Ten by Three, in partnership with the Missouri Botanical Garden, turn this playful décor into steady income that helps local families protect fragile forest habitats.
