We take this item for granted, but it changed these women’s lives.
This video shows a life changing moment for these women.
Bangladesh is a Caste society – most of the women we serve there are of the lowest caste. They are regularly beaten, set on fire, and forced into child marriage. Every human rights violation you can think of most of these women have endured.
With the phones provided by AT&T, these women were able to move forward with their lives. For Apala Biswas, the phone helped her communicate so she no longer needed to walk to places to get information or to get stock for her store. This saved her a lot of time and money. For Rekha Biswas, her phone helped her communicate when she was very sick and in the hospital. She also told me she felt safer walking in the village knowing she could call someone should trouble arise. For Priti Kormoker, the phone helped her family business. She and her husband owned a fish business. Her husband would ride miles one way to their wholesaler – and the fish were often out when he would arrive. Not only was her husband traveling for no point, but this meant that the other women in the village couldn’t rely on her fish business for their source of protein for the day. With the phone, her husband could check before traveling if there would be fish or not.
Something many of us take for granted, phones, have empowered these women far beyond what you could imagine.
